How can I bypass the inbuilt sound card on my computer to go to an external dac?

Answer

You can playback your DSD files on a Mac or PC computer in true DSD audio using Playback Designs, Myrek  or other true DSD DAC to replace your sound card.

If you buy a Playback Design or Mytek DSD DAC it will stream from your computer across your USB port to the DSD DAC.  For the Mac and iTunes, you'll need to get Pure Music so that you can import your DSD files to iTunes.  For PC, we suggest JRiver Media Player as your song manager.  Once you get that setup, make sure you select the DSD DAC as your device to bypass the soundcard.

Without Pure Music, the Apple operating system will not allow DSD audio.  A PC with JRiver Media Player does not require Pure Music.  You may want to make sure you have all the updates needed on your computer that the DAC manufacturer requires.

For a technical aspects of streaming DSD over USB, you can read Andreas Koch's article on the subject.
